To cover over 300 Ha for the Port Augusta Power StationAsh Storage area, we needed to develop an accurate and fast method of distributing our native seed mix over the site. We used a mechanical compost spreader to sow 4 ha per hour and we consistently sowed 30 ha per day!
The mix contained a mish mash of seed from big puffy chenopods to tiny sharp native grasses. That’s 2.7 million viable seeds per hectare (from our lab testing). Our seeds were mechanically mixed to ensure an even spread of species and we used a few different ‘recipes’ to suit different zones on the site. Now that most of the seed is in the ground, it’s a waiting game. With our strong seed viability testing results we’re very excited to see the results, the timing of which will of course depend on Mother Nature!
