Succession Ecology has been formed by Glenn Christie and Briony Horner. With over 50 years combined experience in the environment industry we have built a multi-faceted environmental consulting business. We are passionate about using natural processes to create, restore, build and manage ecosystems.

Our pathways to this end-point are from two very different directions. Glenn, the practitioner, through a passion for seed collection and broadacre revegetation techniques and Briony, the ecologist, through research into animal and plant interactions and species resource use.

Succession Ecology can take your project from beginning to end with project design and management, addressing legislative requirements and compliance, site assessments and approvals, to site remediation, recovery and monitoring.

Glenn Christie, Director and Revegetation Consultant

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Natural Resources Management 1993, University of Adelaide
  • Workzone Traffic Management
  • White Card, Construction Industry Training
  • Remote First Aid

Glenn brings over 30 years’ experience starting in native seed collection and then expanding into revegetation activities, including: revegetation projects (design, site preparation, direct seeding and planting), seed orchards (design, establishment and management), weed management, remnant vegetation restoration and management.

Dr. Briony Horner, Director and Ecologist

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Natural Resources Management with Honours 1994, University of Adelaide
  • PhD Ecology 2013, University of Adelaide
  • White Card, Construction Industry Training
  • Remote First Aid

Briony brings 28 years of experience in environmental project design and management. These have included ecological research projects, biological surveys, landscape recovery, revegetation, habitat restoration, native species reintroductions and recovery, seed orchard establishment and management, nursery establishment and management, pest control and pest proof exclusion zones.

Succession Ecology has field crews that complete the bulk of our seed collecting and cleaning as well as revegetation and weed control activities.  We employ extra staff as required; see some of the famed “6-tonne of Seed Crew” below, for example.

A Successional Approach

Our unique approach to revegetation involves a ‘ground up’ methodology, which floods a site with seeds of native colonising species. The use of colonising species provides rapid site stabilisation and initiates the process of recovery to build ecosystem function. These species add organic carbon to the soil, attract invertebrates, deposit seed, compete with weeds and provide cover. Colonising species in the arid zone can reproduce within 6–8 weeks of rainfall, bolstering the seedbank. These attributes provide a great catalyst for building ecosystems in the arid zone.
