revegetation

Revegetation of a highy saline low-lying coastal site with native Chenopod species.

The site was located near the township of St Kilda, in low lying areas adjacent coastal salt-flats. The site was hand sown with native Chenopod species including Atriplex spp., Enchylaena spp. and Nitraria spp. to withstand the harsh saline conditions.

Initially, germination rates were high, but there was strong competition from broadleaf weed species (particularly Coastal Galenia and Horehound) in the early successional stages. From the 6th year onwards, native species have dominated the site in a number of growing areas. As you can see in the photo above, the site is lookng great, and is covered with big healthy native shrubs.
