Revegetation & Restoration

Our Revegetation Services

Succession Ecology supports revegetation solutions with the aim of site stabilisation, site remediation and ecological restoration in areas disturbed by mining, construction, exotic fauna and flora, and other processes. No project is too small or too large due to our specialist knowledge of tailoring the best method and species mix to our client’s project requirements and restoration objectives.

Native Seed Collection

To deliver quality revegetation outcomes, Succession Ecology collects native seed across South Australia. Our seed stock supports diverse project types:

  • Landfill remediation and stabilization
  • Mine site and industrial refuse remediation
  • Carbon farming initiatives
  • Biodiversity revegetation
  • Construction site spoil and stabilization
  • Restoration projects

Our seed mixes are generated based on our client’s revegetation goals, implementing species characteristics and site conditions to ensure optimal revegetation success.

Our Revegetation Methods

We tailor our approach to each project’s unique requirements:

  • Hand Seeding – Manual seed distribution allows targeted species placement in specific areas. This low-impact method is ideal for infill seeding among established vegetation and to create a natural heterogeneity of vegetation patches.
  • Broad-Acre Direct Seeding – Using agricultural machinery such as spreaders and seeders, we can cover large areas with minimal staff costs rapidly and with maximum efficiency.
  • Tubestock Planting – Manual planting of seedling often provides a higher certainty for survival of specific species and a quicker visual impact of revegetation. While more costly than direct seeding, tubestock can be beneficial for certain site conditions and restoration goals.

In line with our client’s project needs, we can combine site-specific seed mixes with tubestock planting to ensure rapid vegetation cover while also incorporating slow-growing or sensitive species into their revegetated area.

Large-Scale Seeding

We’ve developed a specialized methodology for semi-arid and arid systems that can prepare and seed 30–120 hectares per day, depending on terrain. Using agricultural machinery for site preparation and seeding, our method facilitates seed capture and soil deposition, promoting rapid germination and establishment.

This approach leverages the biological traits of arid-adapted species, which exploit favourable conditions to reproduce prolifically. By applying seed at high densities we establish early successional plant communities and initiate primary succession from bare earth.
