Native Seed

Succession Ecology’s Seed Department offers a unique resource to our clients by providing a range of locationally and nationally native plant seeds – often in bulk. We are the only company in South Australia that can provide native seed at a large scale (tons). This capacity enables us to contribute to broad-scale revegetation and positively contribute to landscape-scale ecological restoration across South Australia.

Collection

We specialise in the supply of large quantities of native grass and saltbush (chenopod) species especially from arid and semi-arid systems. We also collect species to order for our clients; these include Eucalyptus species, Acacia species, sedges, rushes, and other understorey and ground cover species.

The image shows a field technician brushing seeds of Black Bluebush (Maireana pyramidata) into a large plastic bin. Although sometimes low-tech, our techniques are highly effective.

Cleaning and preparation

Almost all species we collect require some cleaning, which we do in our dedicated warehouse. Many species are available at either a cleaner “nursery” grade or a more-economical “revegetation” grade. On request, we offer seed viability testing.

The image on the right shows a field technician exploiting differences in density to separate seed, which is heavy and falls straight down, from chaff, which is light, and blown away by a fan.

Mixing

Every project requires a unique mix of seed and the seeding density to achieve the desired outcomes. A seed mix is the combination of the seed that will be seeded onto a site. Every seed mix is individually tailored to each project and can be recommended by our staff or requested specifically by our clients. In general, our recommendations for most projects are to have a higher proportion of early-successional coloniser species, with a lower proportion of climax species, which facilitates a “ground-up” approach.

Provenance

We can supply seed from specific known provenance. For example, a project may require seed to be sourced from within 50 km of the site, or within a particular landscape board. Please note that sourcing seed from a specific region may be priced higher, owing to increased transport or collection costs. Please contact seed@successionecology.com.au to discuss further.
